There is less than a month before community members throughout the state will be going to the polls to cast their votes for school board candidates and deciding on their local school budgets. Pharmaceutical Company Helps Create Career Academy at NJ High School

Governor James E. McGreevey announced last week that Pfizer, Inc. will contribute $500,000 to help create a career academy at a New Jersey high school. Jersey City Schools Receive Magna Award
The Jersey City Public School District has been selected as one of 25 winners in the American School Board Journal’s Magna Awards 2002 program. The district was honored for its Fifteen Together/PACE Program, an effort designed to reduce the student dropout rate.

—Sponsored by the Keep America Beautiful organization, this month-long celebration recognizes the ongoing efforts of Americans to improve their environment through a variety of educational clean-up and improvement projects. 1-30 Mathematics Education Month—To celebrate this month, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics plans local and national events to increase student, parent and public awareness of the importance of understanding mathematics in today’s world. More information can be found at www.nctm.org.

2 International Children’s Book Day—Sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People, this day is celebrated on Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday to help young children develop an understanding of other cultures through literature. More information can be found at www.ibby.org.


7-13 Week of the Young Child—The Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize that children’s opportunities are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that every child experiences the type of early environment—at home, at child care, at school and in the community—that will promote their early learning. 14-20 National Library Week—Sponsored by the American Library Association, it is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. Many school libraries also celebrate the month of April as School Library Media Month, sponsored by the American Association of School Librarians, a division of ALA.
