May 3 Legislative Action
Immunization Registry NJSBA supported A2240 (Quigley, Morgan, Blee), which creates a Statewide Immunization Registry Act. The registry is designed to serve as a single repository of immunization and other preventive health screening records to aid, coordinate and promote effective and cost-efficient disease screening, prevention, and control efforts in the state. The bill was reported out of the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee with amendments to provide that a newborn infant born on or after January 1, 1998 would be enrolled in the registry and that children born prior to that date may be enrolled at the parent or legal guardians request. The bill now goes to the full Assembly for consideration.
Protective Eyewear NJSBA supported A2091 (Barnes), legislation that requires children who wear eyeglasses to wear protective eyewear while participating in certain sports activities. The bill provides for grants for low-income families to purchase the protective eyewear. It does not require the schools to provide the eyewear and relieves the school districts of any and all liability. The bill was reported out of the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee, and was referred to the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee for further review.
