NJSBA Arguments as Amicus Help to Reverse Unfunded Radon Testing Requirement

The Council on Local Mandates on August 20 concurred with arguments presented by NJSBA and several local school districts that a statute enacted in 2000, which requires radon testing in public schools every five years, is a new unfunded state mandate and, therefore, violates the New Jersey Constitution. On August 11, the New Jersey Supreme Court denied the North Haledon school district’s petition to withdraw from the Manchester Regional High School District, citing a negative impact on educational diversity. 8 International Literacy DayThis day highlights the importance of reading, particularly from a multicultural, international perspective. It is sponsored annually by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization and the International Reading Association.

11 Patriot Day—This time is set aside to honor the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Approximately 3,000 people were killed on that day.

20-24 America’s Legislators Back to School WeekSponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures, the purpose of this week is to encourage elected officials in all 50 states to meet personally with young constituents and to answer questions, share ideas, listen to concerns and impart a greater understanding of the legislative process. NJSBA is currently working with its legislative committee to organize visits from legislators at New Jersey’s public schools.

21 International Day of PeaceObserved each year on the third Tuesday in September, which is the opening day of the United Nations General Assembly, the day is devoted to commemorating the ideals of peace within and among all nations. A major effort for 2004 is to convince governments around the world to commit to a global cease-fire for that day.
