Updates to the Critical Policy Reference Manual Are Now Available
NJSBA’s Policy and Library Resources Department has just completed the 2003 update to the Critical Policy Reference Manual. This update is one of the most extensive ever, due to the demands of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. In all, forty-four policies and/or their legal references were affected in some way by NCLB. Department of Education Issues NCLB Report Card
The Department of Education recently released New Jersey’s first No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Report Card. The NCLB Report Card contains academic performance reports at the state, local and individual school levels disaggregated into subgroups, information on teacher qualifications, student attendance, dropout rates and school status as to adequate yearly progress. NCLB Packet
The State Department of Education expects to release 2003 No Child Left Behind adequate yearly progress data on schools by the end of September. To help school leaders communicate about the AYP status of their districts’ schools, NJSBA is preparing an information packet, Communicating About Adequate Yearly Progress Under No Child Left Behind—2003. Backpack Awareness Day – Sept. 24
The 2003 National School Backpack Awareness Day will be held on September 24. This annual observation calls awareness to the strain and back pain experienced by many school children from overloaded packs. An estimated 40 million youths carry their schoolbooks in backpacks, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association, which reported 6,000 injuries from backpack use in the United States in 1999. Notes From the Field
It’s the start of another school year and time to make sure your board is ready for all that the new year may bring. If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to set annual goals for the district and communicate them to the public. Goal setting will provide direction for the upcoming year and keep the board focused as you confront the inevitable bumps along the way. Goal setting also provides the basis for the superintendent evaluation and board self-evaluation processes, which are completed in the spring. Most important, a goal-setting workshop gives the board and administration the chance to build and reinforce a strong team relationship. Get the full story.
Raymond Milam, urban field service representative, is retiring from NJSBA effective November 1. Ray provided technical assistance to the 60 urban school districts over the last 17 years. NJSBA wishes Ray good luck in his future endeavors!
Position Available—Urban Field Service Representative
NJSBA is currently seeking a candidate for an urban field service representative in its Manalapan office. As management consultant to urban school boards, the duties of the position include board effectiveness training, school community relations, superintendent evaluations and searches, strategic planning, and marketing/public engagement referenda. The candidate must also provide staff support to the NJSBA Urban Boards Committee and to county school board associations. The candidate must be able to develop and deliver effective presentations, have strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, and be a self-starter. Knowledge of public education and school board governance in urban districts is required. The candidate must work evenings/weekends as required to carry out the responsibilities of the position. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, two years experience with a local board of education or agency, department or organization dealing with education is required. Experience with Windows 2000 and Microsoft Word is also required. NJSBA offers an excellent benefits package. The minimum salary is $54,996.
