NJSBA Calls for Improvements to No Child Left Behind Reporting System

The New Jersey School Boards Association, as part of a statewide coalition of education organizations, will lobby Congress for changes to the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The changes would encourage more accurate reporting of academic progress and help public schools to focus on the goals of the federal law, according to NJSBA’s executive director, Edwina M. Lee. Ethics Decisions The School Ethics Commission recently issued two public advisory decisions and five complaint decisions that further clarify school official activity under the School Ethics Act. In four of the decisions, the Commission found no probable cause to credit the allegations and dismissed the complaints. In the fifth decision, the Commission found that a board member violated the School Ethics Act when he solicited a contribution to his borough council campaign, implying that the contribution could affect the vendor’s future contracts with the board of education.

13 Columbus Day/Discoverers’ Day – This is a federal holiday celebrated on the second Monday in October to honor all explorers and to commemorate Christopher Columbus’ sighting of the New World on October 12, 1492.

19-25 National School Bus Safety Week – Sponsored by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the week’s theme for 2003 is Shhh-Railroad Crossing.
