Description: When there is a loss of life or other tragedy in a school’s community, the impact is immediate and emotional. Those tragedies not only affect those who were friendly with the individual, but the impact is widespread and includes those with loved ones and friends who have experienced, or may be experiencing similar challenges. According to current best practices, the specific processes schools provide after tragedies differ based on the causes. In order to support all members of the school community, the clinical responses for accidents and medical causations differ from those that are self-inflicted. Attendees will learn from healthcare and educational professionals of the responses to these tragedies that will promote healing, will proactively address those who may be especially impacted by the tragedy, and provide hope for those grieving. Understanding the most appropriate response is empowering and provides the tools to support the school community.
