Many districts struggle to ensure that professional learning communities, groups of colleagues that are formed to foster collaborative learning, are productive and teacher-led. The Somers Point district has created a model that enables teachers to lead their PLCs, and ensures that the learning communities are focused on teaching and learning, rather than on administrative tasks – all to the benefit of students.
The district has 19 teacher leaders who have been trained in facilitating Professional Learning Communities. The school schedule allows the communities to meet weekly. PLC teams write relevant SMART goals to improve student learning. The teacher leaders also meet once per month with the supervisor of curriculum to learn additional tools and protocols for facilitating the learning communities. The model, which is sustainable, has been cited by the state Department of Education
