Knowing the benefits of devoting additional time to writing, and delving deeper into mathematical concepts via real-life applications, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Regional school district changed the middle school day to provide more time for instruction in these key areas.
This program’s goal is to improve student achievement in math, language arts and other subjects. The district rearranged the middle school schedule to provide students with additional periods of writing and math daily. Each student now takes a language arts class, as well as a writing workshop; and a math explorations class, as well as a math class.
While the district is still assessing the impact of these changes on student achievement, several students have said that these classes helped to prepare them for high school.
