The Irvington School District is laying the groundwork for future school leadership with an innovative training program that lets staff members see what it feels like to be principal.
The Aspiring Administrators program provides training to staff members who possess Provisional Principal Certification. Participants receive specialized training in the principal’s areas of responsibility, such as curriculum, instruction, assessment, safety, parental communication, medical emergencies, and compliance with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights.
Once they have completed training, staff members are given the chance to serve as “acting principal” for the day, when a regular school principal is absent. Each participant has the opportunity to cover a building two to three times a year. In addition to providing valuable training to staff members who want to further their careers, this program helps build the district’s capacity to fill future leadership vacancies.
