Where does the Administration of Gov. Phil Murphy stand on current issues facing public education?

School board members can learn more about the administration’s education agenda when Cary Booker, the governor’s senior policy advisor for education, addresses the annual NJSBA/NJPTA Legislative Day on Thursday, May 16 in Trenton. Booker will serve as the program’s luncheon speaker.

In addition, the conference will include a panel discussion featuring prominent legislators:

  • Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, chair of the Assembly Education Committee;
  • Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, vice chair of the Assembly Education Committee;
  • Sen. Vin Gopal, vice chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee;
  • Sen. Samuel Thompson, a member of the Senate Education Committee.

Topics will include school funding, assessments, special education and mental health services. NJSBA Executive Director Dr. Lawrence S. Feinsod will moderate the discussion.

Following the legislative panel, Dr. Feinsod will moderate a discussion of current educational issues featuring group governmental relations staff members.

In the late morning, Peter Chen, policy counsel from Advocates for Children of New Jersey, will speak on the importance of the 2020 U.S. Census to school districts.

During the conference, approximately 15 state legislators are expected to stop by and provide brief remarks to the attendees.

There is no fee to attend the annual NJSBA/NJPTA Legislative Day. However, preregistration is required. The preregistration deadline has been extended to 12 Noon, Wednesday, May 15.

The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (registration starting at 8:15) at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial, George Washington Ballroom, 1 Memorial Drive, Trenton, NJ 08608. The program offers 2 Board Member Academy Credits and includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
