At West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North, student council members were concerned that the traditional “king and queen” of the prom contest had grown outdated. To make the affair more meaningful and inclusive of all gender identities, the “king and queen” were replaced by “the knights of the roundtable.”
Contestants submitted videos so that students knew more about the candidates they were electing. The principal and community have been supportive of the change.
In this interview with the NJSBA’s Ray Pinney, student council president Sonia Balakrishnan and vice president Kirthi Chigurupati and their principal, Jonathan Dauber, discuss the students’ reasoning and the positive reception the change received.
