The NJSBA and the Morris Plains School District will come together for the next “Are You I-STEAM Ready?” workshop hosted by, and held at, Borough School in Morris Plains.
I-STEAM stands for Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math.
This unique workshop will feature a day of I-STEAM learning experiences and how to plan for and implement an I-STEAM learning environment in your school.
Learn about the process that the Morris Plains school district went through to transform traditional STEM learning into inspirational and creative Integrative STEAM learning spaces designed to deepen student learning through the design process.
Workshop participants will walk away with an understanding of I-STEAM design challenge elements; the planning and implementation of a STEAM Lab including space and materials, and curriculum and staffing.
Participants will also learn how the arts standards align with and blend with STEM content areas through arts integration; how to leverage virtual reality for immersive real-world learning that is relevant and meaningful to students; makerspace challenges that establish a foundation of I-STEAM learning; and how STEAM learning promotes collaboration and communication between students.
This workshop will be hands-on and interactive, giving participants a feeling for what it would be like as a student learner in a STEAM Lab environment. Board members who attend will learn how the board of education can support I-STEAM learning experiences and environments in their districts.
Registration: Registration is available online.
Date: March 21, 2019
Location: Borough School, 500 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains, NJ 07950
The session includes:
Roundtable Discussion on Planning & Implementing STEAM Learning: Join the district leadership team in Morris Plains as we discuss the journey that led us to our STEAM learning lab environment. From the initial concepts to the design of the space and the eventual curricular supports, learn about the plan, the process, and the outcomes.
Virtual Reality: Take a journey into an immersive virtual reality experience on the HTC Vive VR Headsets in one of the three VR bays in our STEAM lab. Whether you choose to explore the earth via Google Earth, journey the ecosystems of the ocean in The Blu, or construct a bridge using Google blocks, you will learn how these immersive opportunities connect to and deepen the students’ STEAM learning experiences.
Maker Space: Using nuts and bolts, toothpicks and q-tips, enjoy this engineering and design challenge in which low tech resources help you to develop your solution. A typical experience in our STEAM learning lab, the low tech makerspace provides a critical element to fostering creativity and iterative thought process.
Arts Integration: Learn how the arts standards play a critical role in the I-STEAM model. Take away some valuable arts integration strategies that span content areas and grade levels.
Put the TEAM in STEAM: Experience the power of communication and collaboration, both critical elements of the STEAM Learning Lab as well as life in general. Through challenges that place a huge emphasis on collaboration and communication, you will take away activities that can be built into your classroom and school to foster these skills.
