At its February meeting, the State Board of Education heard updates and took action on the following items:

Comprehensive Accountability Report  Jersey City Public School District  The State Board heard an update on Jersey City’s transition to local control. Although scheduled to return to full local control in October 2020, those efforts have been slowed by the pandemic and the transition period has been extended. In accordance with the transition plan, the N. J. Department of Education partnered with the Bloustein Local Government Research Center of Rutgers University to form a comprehensive accountability office. The office is responsible for collecting and publishing data that corresponds to the scorecard used to evaluate districts and demonstrates whether the district is making “substantial and sustainable” progress on established metrics. This data is supplemented with qualitative observations from highly-skilled professionals.

Career and Technical Education Month The State Board passed a resolution recognizing February as Career and Technical Education Month. The resolution recognized that nearly 150,000 students participate in career and technical programs.

Bylaws of the State Board of Education The State Board adopted revised bylaws for its operation. The changes include updates to the edition of Robert’s Rules of Order that it will follow, revising the bylaws to make them more gender neutral.
