NJSBA was recognized during a ceremony on June 14 for its role as a founding partner and supporter of the state’s major sustainable schools initiative. The award was presented during the annual sustainability summit, sponsored by Sustainable Jersey.
“Whenever I speak about the many partnerships NJSBA has established to advance public education, Sustainable Jersey for Schools rises to the top of the list,” said NJSBA’s Executive Director Dr. Lawrence S. Feinsod. “NJSBA worked with The Sustainability Institute and the education community on developing the program’s certification standards. Today, I serve on the Board of Trustees for Sustainable Jersey, along with our past president, Don Webster. Our commitment remains strong, because of the benefit this program provides to local school districts and public school students.”
Feinsod made his comments during a presentation on “Sustainable Practices in Schools.”
Since it was launched in 2014, Sustainable Jersey for Schools has provided $1.8 million in grants to school districts, along with technical assistance and training. Thanks to the program, our schools have implemented more than 3,900 activities in areas such as energy efficiency, waste management, healthy environments, wellness, and student learning.
The program’s growth has been phenomenal. Over 56% of the state’s school districts are participating — a number, Feinsod said, that he believes will continue to grow.
