The New Jersey School Boards Association’s Delegate Assembly meets twice yearly to set policies that determine the Association’s position on educational issues, and establish bylaws that govern its operations. Every two years, the DA also meets to elect NJSBA officers. Each board of education in the state is entitled to one voting delegate.
In accordance with Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive Order 104, which limited the size of gatherings, the Delegate Assembly originally scheduled for May 16 was postponed to Saturday, June 27.
Virtual Meeting to Be Held June 27 NJSBA will now be holding that meeting virtually, rather than at the Conference Center at Mercer, as the DA typically draws more than 150 participants.
The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Delegates can attend the meeting via NJSBA’s Webex videoconferencing service, and will need a computer or device with a camera to participate, as well as a smart phone, in order to vote on resolutions. Registered delegates, alternates or other board members serving as delegates will be informed of the logon information for the DA videoconference.
Delegates must be registered by 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 in order to receive the logon information and the link. Delegates may register themselves here.
Members of the public can listen to the Delegate Assembly by telephone; the telephone number and access code will be posted on the NJSBA website here, closer to June 27.
Resolutions Delegates will vote on two resolutions at the June 27 meeting.
- Pohatcong, Alpha, Bloomsbury (Warren) The resolution seeks to reduce the threshold requirements for representation of a sending board on the receiving district board of education.
- Springfield Township (Burlington) The resolution seeks new policy language requiring the constituent district of a regional board of education to fill a board vacancy, rather than the regional board, which currently has the responsibility to fill the vacancy.
Delegates who have proposed amendments to the resolutions should email the suggested changes to Cynthia Jahn, NJSBA general counsel, by 5 p.m. Friday, June 26.
Handbook to be Mailed The NJSBA Delegate Assembly Handbook, consisting of all materials relevant to the meeting, will be mailed June 10, 2020 to all preregistered delegates, alternates or other board members serving as delegates. It will also be posted on the NJSBA website at www.njsba.org/da. The rules of conduct for the NJSBA Delegate Assembly can be found here.
