As the 2019-2020 school year gets underway, the NJSBA continues to offer members information concerning the potential hazard of mercury vapor emitting from rubberized gym floors.
Over the past two years, the Association has distributed information on the subject to local school districts. The May-June 2017 issue of School Leader magazine included an article about how a Burlington County school district addressed the issue. In addition, School Board Notes has referenced guidance from the New Jersey Work Environment Council about the mercury vapor hazard and remediation.
Workshop 2019, Oct. 21 through Oct. 24, will feature a special group session on the issue, on Wednesday, October 23rd, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The session, “Mercury Vapor Hazard in Gym Floors,” will address air quality standards, health hazards, detection and remediation. Panelists include representatives of school districts that have addressed the problem, an expert from the New Jersey Department of Health, and an advocate for workplace safety.
In addition, two other sessions will be offered on the subject. For information on all programs, visit the Workshop 2019 website.
