The winter 2023 issue of School Leader is headed to mailboxes and already available to read online.

The quarterly magazine, which focuses on trends and issues of interest to boards of education, school administrators and other education leaders, includes a cover story on how local boards can help student representatives succeed.

The article notes that as a result of legislation Gov. Phil Murphy signed in January 2022, each board is now required to include at least one student representative. Former student representatives as well as board members share their insights on how to take advantage of student input while helping students get the most out of their board service.

Irene LeFebvre, president of the New Jersey School Boards Association, shares words of wisdom about how board members can help parents in her President’s Message. In his Executive Word column, Dr. Timothy Purnell, the Association’s executive director, highlights the budgetary challenges schools are facing amid rampant inflation – as well as how NJSBA continues to advocate for schools.

Brandon Pugh, the Association’s former vice president for legislation/resolutions and a senior fellow on the R Street Institute’s Cybersecurity and Emerging Threats Team, explores what districts can do to protect themselves from cybersecurity threats.

Other articles include a feature on best practices in forming a threat assessment team, a roundtable with three business administrators focusing on how school districts are navigating increasing costs, a profile on Adam Parkinson, president of the West New York Board of Education and NJSBA’s 2022-2023 School Board Member of the Year, and a feature on how school districts are fighting lies and misinformation spread via social media.

The issue also includes insights from legal experts in its Legally Speaking feature, recommendations from the Association’s Field Services Department in its Field Perspective feature and more.
