TRENTON, Sept. 26, 2022 – Dr. Timothy Purnell, executive director of the New Jersey School Boards Association, issued a statement following the death of former Gov. James J. Florio, who died Sept. 25 at age 85. He served as the state’s chief executive from 1990 to 1994 and was also an eight-term congressman.
“The NJSBA joins the rest of the state in mourning the passing of Gov. Florio, who worked tirelessly to advance the interests of New Jersey. As governor, he fought to secure more funding for our schools. He was a friend to NJSBA, meeting with officers and staff on several occasions, speaking before our Delegate Assembly, and attending the Workshop conference, even after he left office as governor. As a congressman, he authored the bill that led to the cleanup of toxic Superfund sites and made the state a better place for generations to come.
“The New Jersey School Boards Association extends its condolences to the family of Gov. Florio. He was dedicated to New Jersey, including its schools and children. He will be missed.”
