The New Jersey School Boards Association is seeking a deputy executive director who will report to the executive director.

Responsibilities

As the deputy executive director, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing internal operations, allowing the executive director to be the front-facing leader of the association. Working closely with the executive team, you will contribute to the strategic planning, efficient management and continuous improvement of the organization.

Key responsibilities include

Executive Leadership & Communications

  • Provide support to the executive director in communicating the organization’s strategic plan, objectives and performance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in formulating and implementing internal policies, guidelines, procedures and programs, making budget recommendations.
  • Act on behalf of the executive director during their absence, ensuring seamless continuity in leadership.

Supervision and Administration

  • Serve as supervisor and administrator for all departments (excluding general counsel and internal control’s offices).
  • Oversee staff and leadership meetings, professional development, evaluations, association budget development and leadership training.
  • Uphold NJSBA guidelines, regulations, policies and procedures, offering relevant analysis of legislation and regulations.

Leadership and Training

  • Provide leadership to departments/staff, fostering healthy relationships, inclusive decision-making and respectful conflict resolution.
  • Design and implement professional development activities, workshops and learning initiatives.

Assessment and Reporting

  • Assess leaders quarterly and provide updates to the executive director on progress toward association strategic priorities (as designated by the executive director).
Profile of the Successful Candidate

We seek a leader with a blend of human resource, supervisory, administrative and management experience. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to implement strategic visions and a commitment to public education.

  • Professional background reflecting effective collaboration, influence and commitment to public education.
  • Understanding of New Jersey K-12 and public higher education systems, current education issues and business implications.
  • Appreciation for diversity of people and ideas.
  • Operational capacity to gather, assess and use information skillfully for problem-solving and improving workflow.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, professional presentation style and high emotional intelligence.
  • Five years cabinet-level leadership experience and a graduate degree in education, public administration, human resource management, business or a related field.
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout the state and accommodate evening and weekend schedules (as requested by the executive director).

Start timeframe: NJSBA aims to have someone in place by July 1, 2024.

Compensation

Commencing with a competitive salary of $200,000, the comprehensive benefits package includes enrollment in the State Health Benefits Program covering medical, prescription, and dental, participation in the Public Employees’ Retirement System, generous paid time off, a flexible hybrid work schedule and a company vehicle.
