Theresa Maughan, a high school social studies teacher at East Orange STEM Academy and New Jersey’s 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year, will deliver a special presentation at the New Jersey School Boards Association’s Equity Conference, Friday, May 20.

In 2018, the New Jersey School Boards Association created the Equity Council to examine the issue of educational equity and share research and best practices with NJSBA members. The council has since worked to support the needs of New Jersey districts.

The New Jersey Department of Education named Maughan its State Teacher of the Year on Oct. 6. She is working with the department to promote diversity in the teacher workforce and educational improvement.

The conference will also feature a presentation highlighting the role boards of education play in diversity, equity and inclusion, featuring Dr. Walter Greason of Macalester College and Erika Leak, whose expertise includes education policy, curriculum, instruction, and diversity, equity and inclusion.
