In August 2022, Gov. Phil Murphy signed a new bill into law, A4075/3229, which requires boards of education and charter school trustees to develop and adopt a policy that establishes a threat assessment team at each school.

According to the new statute, each school’s threat assessment team will provide educators with assistance in identification and assessment of students that may be at risk of engaging in violence or other harmful activities and for the delivery of intervention strategies to manage the risk of harm for students who pose a risk to the maintenance of a safe and secure school environment that enhances the learning experience for all members of the school community.

The New Jersey School Boards Association has released an update to Critical Policy Reference Manual, File Code 5131.5, which includes amendments based upon the new law. Members can access this update as well as the CPRM by logging in to the NJSBA Policy website.
