Robert Asaro-Angelo, the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, will be a keynote speaker at the New Jersey School Boards Association’s Labor & Employment Summit on Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The virtual event will feature seminars covering critical labor and employment topics for school districts and will also include NJSBA staff, legal experts, representatives from higher education as well as school district staff.

Asaro-Angelo was nominated to serve as commissioner by Gov. Phil Murphy in January 2018 and was chosen by his counterparts across the nation to serve as board chair of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies for the 2021 association year.

From 2010 to 2017, he served as Eastern regional representative for the U.S. Department of Labor under the Obama administration, managing the department’s regional activities and coordinating federal initiatives on the regional, state, and local levels.

Prior to his government service, he worked for the Laborers International Union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the Service Employees International Union Local 1115 organizing and educating public employees, construction workers and nursing home employees about government and politics.
