School Leader, the quarterly magazine of the New Jersey School Boards Association, is pleased to introduce a new “Up Close” companion video feature that accompanies a recent feature article.

The latest feature highlights Dr. Karen Cortellino, a longtime member of the Montville Township Board of Education and the president of the New Jersey School Boards Association.

In the video, she shares that she has lived in Montville for almost forty years, where her son and daughter were born and grew up.

After winning a seat on her school board, she quickly took advantage of all the training and learning opportunities that NJSBA has to offer.

“I would go to training, I would bring it back to the board, I just sort of kept my head down, went to a lot of training, brought it back, and became aware of the Iowa Lighthouse Study,” she said, which showed that effective board members result in effective boards, which have a positive impact on school districts.

She also shares that while neither of her parents had the opportunity to go to college, they were determined that she’d get a great education. For as long as she can remember, her mother was always telling her to go to college, she said.

In the video, she also speaks in detail about how her involvement in NJSBA grew over the years and her goals as NJSBA president, which include visiting all 21 counties, getting back to basics, and celebrating all that NJSBA offers board members.
