Dr. Timothy Purnell, who became NJSBA’s ninth executive director in July, is featured in the cover story of the fall 2022 issue of School Leader magazine.

In the interview, Purnell shares his passion for education, discusses his professional experiences in the field, and talks about his vision for the Association.

School Leader also provides a preview of Workshop 2022, which marks NJSBA’s return to an in-person conference after two years of pandemic-era virtual conferences. Highlights of Workshop 2022 will include a presentation by Acting Commissioner of Education Dr. Angelica Allen-McMillan, remarks from the student representative to the State Board of Education, a legislative panel that includes the chair of both the Senate and Assembly education committees, student performances, more than 250 training sessions, some 275 vendors on the Exhibit Floor and more.

Workshop 2022 will be held Oct. 24-26; more information is available here.

The magazine also takes a look at how school districts are handling the teacher shortage, award-winning special education programs, and the innovative New Jersey Public School Labor Management Collaborative. NJSBA also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first issue of School Leader with a look back at education coverage through the years.

Sandy Raup, NJSBA’s business data analyst, provides an overview of recent trends in collective negotiations in New Jersey school districts, while the NJSBA field service representatives share questions from members they have recently answered. The current issue of School Leader also has an analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision on the religious rights of public school staff, and a look at an innovative pandemic-era drama production at Ocean Township High School.

School Leader is published four times per year and mailed to all board members in the state. It is also available online here.
