The agenda for the School Ethics Commission’s meeting Aug. 22, 2023, included the review of three ethics complaints pursuant to the SEC’s previous regulations; the adoption of seven decisions; and the removal of Advisory Opinion A01-01 from the SEC’s website.

At the School Ethics Commission’s regularly scheduled meeting July 25, 2023, six decisions were adopted. Of the six decisions, four resulted in the dismissal of the ethics charges that had been filed against the named respondents, all of whom were board members.

Although board members may participate in social media, they must be mindful of the provisions of the School Ethics Act and the advisory opinions issued by the School Ethics Commission when doing so.

In a continuing effort to ensure that all school officials are aware of, and comply with, the requirements of the School Ethics Act, the School Ethics Commission voted to make eight advisory opinions public at its meeting on June 27, 2023.

On Feb. 1, the State Board adopted updated School Ethics Commission regulations. Last week, School Board Notes focused on the changes to the training requirements. This week, the focus will be on the changes to the rules concerning advisory opinions.

The NJDOE reminds school districts, charter schools, and renaissance school projects that the School Ethics Commission has established an electronic method for completing personal/relative and financial disclosure statements, which are required to be filed annually by all school officials.
