Maryellen LaFronz of the Old Tappan Board of Education received the Bergen County School Boards Association’s Archie F. Hay Award at its June 27 meeting.

The BCSBA has been giving this award out for more than 30 years.  Nominees must be submitted by a board of education resolution.

The award honors local board members who exemplify Dr. Hay’s leadership in the field of education and his commitment to the children of Bergen County. Hay, a former Bergen County superintendent, was responsible for setting up the Bergen County Special Education regions and the Special Services School District.

The award is presented to a Bergen County school board member who, in the opinion of an impartial committee made up of board members from outside of Bergen County, best exemplifies Hay’s leadership and commitment.

LaFronz has been an Old Tappan resident for about 25 years. She first ran for the Old Tappan K-8 board because her children were in the district, and she wanted to show them the importance of public service and to offer her time and energy to help shape local schools.
