New Jersey Board of Education Member of the Year

In recognition of board members' service, leadership and contributions to education, NJSBA is pleased to announce the New Jersey Board of Education Member of the Year Award. Given annually, the award honors an individual board member who: makes significant contributions; exemplifies leadership in the field of education with a strong commitment to the children of New Jersey; demonstrates a strong commitment to his/her personal and professional development as a board member; and shows active involvement in school governance at the local, county and state levels.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations for the New Jersey Board of Education Member of the Year must be submitted on the nomination form. Board members, superintendents, business officials, staff and community members of a local school district may nominate individuals for the award. County Associations may nominate individuals from their own counties, provided they meet the criteria for nomination.

Current NJSBA officers and staff may not nominate candidates for the award nor may current NJSBA officers be nominated for the award.

Criteria for Nomination

Nominees for the award must be currently serving as a member of a local board of education. In addition, they must have:

  1. Served a minimum of 5 years on his/her local board of education.
  2. Achieved NJSBA Certificated Boardsmanship level.
  3. Demonstrated leadership, service and contribution to education at the local, county and state levels.

All nominations are to:
  1. Be made on the nomination form provided by NJSBA. No more than three pages of additional data, inclusive of the statement of the board member's contributions, may be submitted with the nomination. This form may be duplicated or additional copies may be obtained from NJSBA.
  2. Include in the application a statement of the board member's unique and recognized achievements in the areas of service, leadership and contributions to education at the local, county and state levels.
  3. Be received at NJSBA headquarters no later than 5:00 p.m. on June 13, 2008 via Federal Express, registered mail/receipt requested or by personal delivery. All late entries will be rejected (and returned to the person entering such a nomination).

All information requested must be completed.

Selection Procedure

All nomination forms shall be reviewed by the current NJSBA officers to ensure that all criteria and eligibility requirements are met. The nominations will then be forwarded to the officers of another state school boards association. These officers will review the nominations, select the winner of the New Jersey award and forward their selection to the NJSBA President.

Award

The New Jersey Board of Education Member of the Year will be recognized in the following manner:


  1. Presented with a plaque conveying the honor.
  2. Presented with a New Jersey Board of Education Member of the Year pin.
  3. Recognized at the Annual Workshop and Exhibition in Atlantic City.
  4. Recognized with a press release sent to state newspapers and to his/her local newspaper.
  5. Recognized in School Board Notes.
  6. Recognized by his/her local Board of Education with an appropriate letter from the President and Executive Director of NJSBA.
  7. Listed on a permanent New Jersey Board of Education Member of the Year plaque displayed at NJSBA headquarters.
  8. Given a ribbon annually with his/her Workshop badge indicating that he/she is a Board Member of the Year Awardee.
