Playground equipment is generally designed for children ages 5-12 without significant consideration for students with differing cognitive and physical needs. In Pequannock Township, a dedicated group of community and school committee members with support from the school district and town council is working to provide an inclusive experience for all children on the grounds of North Boulevard Elementary School.
Spearheaded by two grandfathers whose conversation with the principal, Dr. Elissa Scillieri, about an inclusive playground in Wayne, an inspired and collaborative effort has followed. We are committed to securing funding for and ensuring construction of a playground that accommodates the play needs of preschool children as well as children for whom other playgrounds are less accessible due to cognitive or physical needs.
School district superintendent, Dr. Michael Portas, has commented that “This playspace can fill a need not only for our school community, but also for families in surrounding towns. We envision a safe and engaging playground where our students can play during school hours and then children and families from all over can meet, make new friends and have fun.”
The committee is coordinating with the school district and township on funding, and is looking to partner with donors that can help meet the $291,000 cost. With support from the school district, town council, in-kind donors, grant funding and generous donations from community members and groups, the district has secured $211,000 as of July 16, 2026 and with additional support, look to break ground soon on a project that will provide opportunities and joy for some truly wonderful children and their families.
