The Middlesex County School Boards Association’s (MCSBA) spring dinner meeting had a special visit from a former Middlesex County school board member – Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell. Dr. Caldwell served on both the New Brunswick BOE and the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey for more than 25 years. He was also the New Jersey State School Board Member of the Year in 2009.
Dr. Caldwell addressed the membership on a variety of topics, including the importance of education and the role of the school board member. He was quick to point out that he was not only the state school board member of the year but also a Master Board Member in NJSBA’s Board Member Academy. The NJSBA’s “training is very important” for a board member.
He also talked about the importance of a school board member’s volunteer service. That “all of you know this volunteer experience, we get more out of it than we put in.”
Dr. Caldwell’s presentation covered many topics, including bringing different sectors of society together, the state’s diversity, and getting our young people more involved in our democracy.

MCSBA President Sharon Miller added, “Many of us in Middlesex County have known Dale for many years and are grateful that someone in the position of Lieutenant Governor understands the importance of the role of the board of education and the many challenges we face each and every day. We were incredibly honored to have him as our guest speaker and thank him for supporting us and considering us his partners in education.”
Caldwell closed with the following statement. “I want to publicly, on behalf of Governor Sherrill and myself, thank you for all that you’re doing for the future of New Jersey. You have the future in your hands, so together, let’s make this future brighter than ever.”
