In a July 23 press release, the NJ Office of the Attorney General and Division of Civil Rights (DCR) announced the establishment of a new Education and Public Accommodations Enforcement Section to “expand DCR’s capacity to address discrimination in K-12 school districts, universities, and other settings covered under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD).” As part of this initiative, the DCR is also partnering with the National Center for Youth Law to develop comprehensive training programs for the new Section.
The new Sections, the press release announces, “will proactively enforce the LAD and investigate matters involving bias‑based harassment and bullying, accommodations for physical disabilities, language‑access barriers affecting English Language Learners, disparate discipline, and discrimination in places of public accommodation.” It will be comprised of a team of legal specialists and investigators who will investigate matters involving alleged discrimination in schools and places of public accommodation.
