In an Aug. 19 broadcast memo, the NJ Department of Education highlighted various key requirements, deadlines, and planning considerations that PEA districts and early childhood partners should address as the school year begins.
Reminders included screening requirements, enrollment projection guidance, and, importantly, the 27-28 phaseout of Temporary Classroom Units (TCUs) in PEA-funded preschool programs. Specifically, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 6A:13A-7.1(f), beginning in the 27-28 school year a district, contracted provider, or Head Start program shall not use TCUs or other similar temporary facilities, as defined at N.J.A.C. 6A:26, for preschool classrooms without prior approval pursuant to N.J.A.C. 6A:5. Districts that receive approval must ensure compliance with N.J.A.C. 6A:26, including requirements related to the use of TCUs or other similar temporary facilities.
