The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) announced on Sept. 16 that it is seeking individuals to serve on the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Advisory Committee (SGTEAC). NJDOE commenced SGTEAC April 2020 with the goal of: 

  • Assisting the NJDOE in developing and disseminating resources that will guide local efforts with implementing fair and balanced selection processes for identification of gifted and talented students; 
  • Building school districts’ understanding of the intersection between social and emotional learning and the needs of gifted and talented students; 
  • Developing awareness around programmatic options and services for gifted and twice-exceptional students; 
  • Identifying equity issues pertaining to gifted and talented education; and 
  • Integrating professional learning opportunities statewide. 

To support school districts’ implementation of the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Act (P.L.2019, c.338), the Division of Teaching and Learning Services seeks a diverse group of individuals with expertise in gifted and talented education to serve on SGTEAC. Interested parties must demonstrate at least three years of experience in gifted education. A self-nomination process will be used to identify educators and stakeholders to serve a two-year term on one of four subcommittees based on candidate qualifications and experience. The four subcommittees are: 

  • Identification (provides best practices and resources designed to support districts with developing an inclusive identification process and procedures); 
  • Programming Options and Services (provides resources and recommendations designed to support districts to intentionally plan services to meet the needs of students identified as gifted and talented); 
  • Professional Development (provides resources and recommendations designed to support educators, administrators, and support staff working with students identified as gifted and talented); and 
  • Intersectionality of Cognitive and Affective Needs (provides best practices and resources to grow educators’, administrators’, and support staffs’ understanding of identified students’ unique social and emotional needs and the impact on their academic and social-efficacy development). 

Each subcommittee is composed of five members who develop recommendations and deliverables, such as one-page resource documents, within their designated area of focus. Open positions are currently available on all subcommittees. 

Members are required to attend all meetings of their designated subcommittee. SGTEAC subcommittee meetings occur, as needed, October – June each academic year to fulfill deliverables. All meetings are held virtually.
