On Thursday, Oct. 15, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) released a public health advisory and an accompanying resource regarding measles preparedness for New Jersey’s schools.

According to the advisory, New Jersey has had two confirmed cases of measles in 2026, but the United States continues to experience a large increase in measles cases, including a large ongoing outbreak in Pennsylvania. NJDOH continues to be notified of New Jersey residents exposed to measles through domestic travel, on transit services, and at healthcare facilities. Measles can spread quickly in schools among unvaccinated individuals and measles exposures can result in time out of school, which disrupts learning.

The Measles Preparedness for Schools resource is a checklist that outlines actionable steps schools can take to prepare for measles. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the existing school guidance document, Measles: Preventing the Spread in Child Care and School Settings.

Please see NJDOH’s advisory for additional information and resources.
