On July 30, 2026, Governor Sherrill signed legislation (P.L.2026, c.56 / S-170) requiring the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) to annually recommend the dates on which a school district may close for spring break.
The legislation, which goes into effect in the 2027-2028 school year, further requires that school districts “consider” the NJDOE’s recommendation as part of their scheduling. The NJDOE will publish its recommended dates by June 30 of the prior school year – e.g. by June 30, 2027, for the 2027-2028 school year.
