The debt-ridden Board of Education is taking the first steps toward laying off 162 teachers’ aides, known as para-professionals, according to union leaders.

N.J. ranks as No. 1 state in preschool spending per child

New Jersey spent more than $1.23 billion on preschool programs during the 2024-25 school year, an increase of more than $100 million from the year before, a new report from the National Institute of Early Education Research found. That’s $18,848 per student.
