Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive Order 164, issued on July 13, postponed “any election scheduled for a date between July 7, 2020 and November 3, 2020,” until the date of the general election, which is Nov. 3. The order further said “no other elections may be held or proceed prior to November 3, 2020.” The order postpones what would have been one of the five dates each year on which a board of education may hold a special school election – the last Tuesday in September. Those elections are generally for a bond referendum or supplemental financial issue. This year, that election would have been Sept. 29. The date of the general election, Nov. 3, is the next available date for boards wishing to propose a school bond referendum. That date is available to districts with a November school election.
