On Oct. 20, 2025, Governor Murphy conditionally vetoed the following bill:

Chronic Absenteeism Task Force A-5779/S-3776 would establish a task force to study the causes of chronic absenteeism and develop recommendations for lowering absenteeism rates. As initially passed by the Legislature, the bill would have created a 20-member group (including one member upon the recommendation of NJSBA) and would have been required to issue a final report to the governor within six months following its organization.

In his conditional veto statement, the governor recommended decreasing the number of task force members certain enumerated groups may recommend, so that the task force has 15 total members. The NJSBA would still be able to recommend one member. The governor’s recommendations also included extending the amount of time the task force has to issue its final report from six months to one year. The governor’s statement, along with his suggested revisions, can be found here.

The bill will now return to the Legislature, where both the Senate and Assembly will need to concur with the governor’s recommendations before it can be returned to his desk for signature.
