In a June 17, 2026 broadcast memo, the New Jersey Department of Education announced regional School Safety and Security Symposiums taking place on July 14 (northern region), 15 (central region), and 16 (southern region), 2026.

Hosted by NJDOE in collaboration with the Urban Area Security Initiative, each one-day event will provide school safety specialists, school staff members, and local first responders with updates on current and emerging school safety issues. Topics include updated school safety guidance; behavioral threat assessment and management guidance; swatting response planning; physical security assessments of the school campus; awareness related to nihilistic violent extremist (NVE) network/764 groups targeting students; and MTSS-informed intervention planning.

School Safety Specialists will receive 5 hours towards their recertification.
