As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms various industries and communication, its impact on education is becoming increasingly relevant.

From generative AI, such as ChatGPT or Grammarly, which can assist both teachers and students, to AI-powered administrative support tools, AI offers new opportunities to support district operations, teaching, and student learning. However, alongside the potential benefits come challenges such as privacy concerns, academic integrity issues, and equitable access to AI technology.

In school districts without policy guidance, educators could unknowingly compromise sensitive information or use AI technology in ways that conflict with district values or legal requirements. Students could unintentionally violate academic integrity policies by relying upon AI-generated content, or experience reduced development of critical thinking skills, or lack understanding about what constitutes original work.

Accordingly, implementing a dedicated, but flexible, AI policy allows districts to proactively address the above concerns.  A dedicated policy ensures that AI is introduced into classrooms and district operations in a way that is thoughtful, secure, and aligned with each district’s unique educational goals. A well-crafted policy clarifies expectations for staff and students and puts guidelines in place to protect districts from legal risks, while supporting appropriate use, and empowering educators to incorporate AI technology in the classroom.

In an effort to assist local school boards that are navigating the expanding role of AI in their buildings, the NJSBA developed a model policy to guide AI use in school districts. This policy is intended to promote responsible integration of AI in education while striking a balance between innovation, student safety, academic integrity, compliance with legal requirements, and privacy protections.

For school districts seeking to adopt or adapt the policy, the full draft is available through the Association’s policy services page at https://www.njsba.org/policy/ under the CPRM link, in the Critical Policy drop down link under policy number 6142.11.
