NJSBA honored a select group of school staff members during its Annual Workshop in October 2025. The third annual “Unsung Superheroes in Education Awards” ceremony recognized those in pre-K-12 public education before a statewide audience in Atlantic City. They are nominated for working tirelessly behind the scenes — often without recognition— to ensure that New Jersey’s schools run smoothly. Their work helps provide a safe and nurturing environment for students or in supporting staff and administration so they can serve as optimal leaders.
The Association’s online weekly newsletter, School Board Notes, recognizes each recipient with a spotlight for their work. This week, we are highlighting Human Resources Professional Ashley Dunker of the Bernards Township School District in Somerset County.
In her role for the past 14 years, Dunker has supported all of the schools in her district, including four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.
“I love that I get to wear many different hats throughout the day—no two days are ever the same,” Dunker said. “The variety keeps the work both exciting and meaningful.”
In today’s world, where many roles are increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, Dunker said she believes it is more important than ever to keep the “human” in the work of human resources.
“Our work goes beyond processes and policies—we focus on people,” the Clinton Township resident said. “As a team, we strive to keep staff members engaged, supported and continuously learning.
“We want employees to feel comfortable asking questions, being curious and knowing they have a trusted resource in HR. Creating that kind of environment is essential to a strong and thriving school community.”
She would like to be remembered as someone who built strong, genuine relationships and led with compassion. Dunker takes pride in being known as a helper and would like her legacy to reflect that she has served as someone others could count on, viewed as approachable, supportive and committed to uplifting others, even during difficult times.
“I strive to be able to create a positive environment, where people feel their voices are valued and heard,” Dunker said.
Receiving an NJSBA Unsung Hero Award has been an “incredibly humbling experience” for her.
“In many districts, central office roles can sometimes be overlooked, but in our district, we truly make an effort to celebrate one another,” she said. “While I was honored to receive this award, it is really a reflection of the collective work we are doing as a team to make Bernards Township such a special place to be.”
The NJSBA congratulates Ashely Dunker on being awarded for this notable achievement!
