The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) released the 2023-2024 New Jersey School Performance Reports on April 2. The reports may be found on the NJDOE’s School Performance Report website.

The School Performance Reports reflect the NJDOE’s commitment to providing parents, students, and school communities with extensive information about each school and local education agency (LEA). While these reports do not fully capture the unique circumstances and efforts of each school community, the NJDOE believes that it is critical to use the available data in the reports, along with other information collected directly within each LEA and community, to start conversations, identify gaps in information, and continue to find ways to ensure all students receive the support and resources that they need.

What’s New in the 2023-2024 School Performance Reports

The 2023-2024 School Performance Reports include changes that respond to stakeholder feedback, federal and state requirements, and data availability. These changes include:

  • Additional chronic absenteeism data showing three-year trends in chronic absenteeism rates, an expanded summary of the percentage of days that students were absent, and whether schools are required to create a corrective action plan based on schoolwide chronic absenteeism rates;
  • Information on whether current and former multilingual learners are earning the Seal of Biliteracy;
  • Expanded visual and performing arts data showing participation for all grades kindergarten through 12;
  • Information on student disciplinary removals, students involved in police notifications, and student arrests by student group and grade level available directly in the School Performance Reports; and
  • New high school persistence and federal 6-year graduation rates aligned with proposed amendments to

NJDOE’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) State Plan.

The initial release of the School Performance Reports will not include postsecondary enrollment rates because the data is not yet available. The NJDOE expects to release that data in the coming months.

Sharing the School and District Reports with your School Community

To help LEAs share the information in the School Performance Reports and support conversations with their school communities, the NJDOE has developed optional tools that LEAs can use to help communicate about the reports. The School Performance Reports toolkit includes:

The NJDOE also provides resources on the NJDOE ESSA Resources webpage to help district and school leaders engage with local stakeholders and use their federal funds for the programs and services students need most. School Performance Reports also provide an opportunity for communities to identify new or emerging

student needs. Information about how annual federal grants may be used to best support students can be found online on the NJDOE Maximizing Federal Funds webpage.
