School Board Notes

Election offices in Monmouth County recently discovered a problem with voter tallies in the 2022 general election that could change the result of a school board contest in Ocean Township.

At its Jan. 11 monthly meeting, New Jersey’s State Board of Education marked School Board Recognition Month by unanimously approving a resolution that commends the hard work and dedication of the state’s nearly 5,000 local school board members.

Voters will head to the polls for a special election Jan. 24 to decide school construction proposals. One town is also having a special school board election to fill the seat of a board member who retired.

What Marie Bilik, president of the Green Township school board, may be most proud of is that her grandson, Christopher Michael Bilik Jr. – who goes by “CJ,” was elected to her same board of education.

In addition to passing its resolution in honor of New Jersey School Board Recognition Month, the New Jersey State Board of Education heard updates and acted on several items at its Jan. 11 meeting.

The New Jersey School Boards Association has posted the 2023 April Election Candidate Kit online on the NJSBA website.

The New Jersey Department of Education announced Jan. 11 that New Jersey has been awarded a five-year $14 million federal grant to expand school-based mental health services for students.

Paterson Public Schools officials announced Jan. 18 that the district has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Full-Service Community Schools program. The grant is in the amount of $499,959 and is expected to be renewed annually...

The New Jersey School Boards Association wants to recognize its very own Lou Schimenti, senior manager, exhibitions and co-op, who recently earned his CEM certification, which recognizes his expertise in the exhibitions and events management arena.

The New Jersey Department of Education recently issued an advisory highlighting key guidance regarding the discipline of students with disabilities.

Before developing a resolution, boards are encouraged to review other policies related to the one you are submitting.
