School Board Notes

Gov. Phil Murphy and New Jersey Department of Education Acting Commissioner Kevin Dehmer recently announced that 18 school districts have received fiscal year 2025 preschool expansion funds.

The Senate Environment and Energy Committee met on Thursday, Oct. 10, and advanced a bill banning single-use utensils as well as a bill involving water quality notifications.

At its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 24, 2024, the School Ethics Commission, among other actions, adopted six decisions concerning previously discussed ethics matters.

Maren Smagala, the communications officer for Hunterdon Central Regional High as well as the president of the New Jersey School Public Relations Association, was a recent guest on “Education Matters.”

Innovative programs in four New Jersey schools have earned recognition in the New Jersey School Boards Association’s annual School Leader Award program.

At the recent Morris County School Boards Association Meeting, held at Pequannock Township High School, six boards of education were recognized for recently earning board certification and one board earned the Carole E. Larsen Master Board Certification.

At the recent Bergen County School Boards Association meeting on Sept. 30, 2024, the Ramsey Board of Education was honored with its board certification and the Carole E. Larsen Master Board Certification.

The Warren County School Boards Association met on Oct. 7 at Architect’s Golf Club in Phillipsburg.

The Bergen County School Boards Association met on Sept. 30 at the Holiday Inn Hasbrouck Heights-Meadowlands in Hasbrouck Heights.

The Essex County School Boards Association met on Oct. 10 at The Appian Way in Orange.

Dr. Miguel A. Cardona, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, and Dr. Mandy K. Cohen, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently sent out a letter to local educational agencies informing them about the availability of free, rapid, at-home COVID-19 tests.

New Jersey has committed $500,000 of fiscal year 2025 funding to a second year of the Innovation Dual Enrollment Pilot Program, the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education announced.

Public testimony on the readoption with amendments of N.J.A.C. 6A:30 is scheduled to be held Nov. 6, 2024. Registration for public testimony will open Oct. 17, 2024, and close at noon Oct. 31, 2024.

The New Jersey School Boards Association is seeking a quality control professional to support the deputy director and to collaborate with senior directors.
