At its brief August meeting, the State Board of Education heard updates and took action on the following items:

  • Appointments— The State Board appointed Katrina McCombs as assistant commissioner for the Division of Early Childhood Services. Ralph Hoag, assistant commissioner for the Division of Administrative Services. Assistant Commissioner McCombs was formerly the Chief School Administrator for the state-operated Camden School District.
  • Donations—The board accepted a donation in the amount of $250.00 from the Medford Lakes Lions Club for the support of student activities at the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf.
  • State Board of Examiners–  Assistant Commissioner for Field Services Ambrose Duckett was appointed by the State Board of Education to the State Board of Examiners. Assistant Commissioner Duckett will also serve as its chair. The State Board of Examiners issues all certificates that are required for public school employment. Individuals must hold the appropriate New Jersey certification in order to be employed as teaching staff members in the public schools of this state. The State Board of Examiners renders decisions on various cases which include, but are not limited to, decisions to revoke or suspend an educator’s certificate(s), appeals of decisions of the Office of Recruitment, Preparation, and Certification and review of applications from individuals who have a criminal record.  The State Board of Examiners meets nine times a year.
