TRENTON, April 24, 2018—New Jersey’s public school students perform near the top in nationwide measures of academic success, yet our state’s public schools still face challenges in closing achievement gaps and ensuring educational opportunity for all students. To help local school district officials meet these challenges and further student growth and learning, the New Jersey School Boards Association will sponsor a conference, “Student Achievement through Multiple Lenses” on Friday, May 4 at Mercer County Community College in West Windsor. Designed as a professional development program for local board of education members, the all-day program is also open to school administrators and educators. Kimberley Harrington, former New Jersey commissioner of education, will deliver the keynote address. Sessions will include:
  • The Positive Impact of Labor-Management Collaboration—Dr. Saul Rubinstein of the Rutgers University School of Labor & Management will address how collaborative efforts advance student achievement, regardless of socioeconomic status, and contribute to a health school climate.
  • The Benefits of Prekindergarten—W. Steven Barnett, co-director and founder of the National Institute for Early Education Research will address the short- and long-term benefits of prekindergarten.
  • Physics First—Camden High School educators will address an initiative that has increased achievement in the sciences by offering physics to ninth-graders before they take biology and chemistry.
  • The Positive Impact of the Arts—Members of Arts Ed NJ will address how the arts benefit student achievement, social-emotion learning and a school climate.
“Student Achievement through Multiple Lenses” will be held at the Conference Center at Mercer on the campus of Mercer County Community College, 1200 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor, N.J. 08550 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 4. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. School board members, district administrators and school staff can obtain registration information on NJSBA’s website at www.njsba.org.
