At its October meeting, the New Jersey State Board of Education heard updates and took action on the following items:
- Presentation of the 2024-2025 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year — The State Board of Education recognized Stefanie Lachenauer, a middle school teacher from the Montgomery Township School District as the 2024-2025 State Teacher of the Year.
- Adoption of Fiscal Accountability Regulations — The State Board adopted updates to the fiscal accountability regulations. The updates include requiring a school district to maintain the same level of insurance coverage when the position of treasurer is eliminated, and its functions are delegated to another person. In addition, the amendments provide the commissioner of education discretion, in addition to using objective criteria, in determining when districts must submit financial reports to the county office. The rules also clarify procedures on the handling of student activity funds, including the definition, required policies and timeline for the expenditure of funds. The adoption also requires that a district choosing to change its tuition certification method for the subsequent year must provide written notice to the New Jersey Department of Education by March 1 each year.
On Oct. 22, members of the State Board of Education will be participating in a panel discussion at Workshop 2024 in Atlantic City. The members will highlight the most recent accomplishments of the board and answer questions from the audience.
