School Board Notes

The New Jersey Department of Education invites educators and other members of the public to comment on the state’s school funding law.

As you recharge this holiday break, I urge you to reflect on our collective mission: to advance public education and promote the achievement of all students through effective governance. Let us embrace the fact that we are better equipped to realize that mission when we rise to meet challenges together.

Carmen Theresa Morales, a Democrat representing Legislative District 34; and Assemblywoman Lisa Swain, also a Democrat representing District 38, highlighted a variety of issues, including school funding.

Applications must be received at NJSBA headquarters by 5 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2025.

Given the breadth of action taken by the School Ethics Commission at its meeting on Nov. 26, 2024, it will be discussed in a four-part series.

Angelo DelliSanti, a leadership solutions strategist with Capturing Kids’ Hearts, was the latest guest on “Education Matters,” a video podcast hosted by Ray Pinney, chief membership engagement officer at the New Jersey School Boards Association.

The ratings agency S&P Global Ratings has raised the bond rating of Newark Public Schools from BBB+ to A-.

Rosemarie Chambers-Jimenez, one of the winners in the New Jersey School Boards Association’s Unsung Superheroes in Education recognition program, was honored Dec. 10 at a Dover Board of Education meeting.

The evening’s program was “AI: Embracing the Power of Artificial Intelligence in Education.”

In honor of the late Daniel T. Sinclair, who died July 6, 2024, and served as NJSBA president from 2017 to 2019 and as president of the Passaic County School Boards Association from 2014 to 2015, the PCSBA hosted its meeting at Lakeland Regional High School, where he served as a board member from 2016 to 2021.

The Marion P. Thomas Charter School Board of Trustees first achieved certification in the fall of 2023. After that, the board set a goal to continue its certification journey and complete it within a year.

Students who meet or exceed the minimum required ASVAB composite score of 35 may use the streamlined portfolio appeal option to demonstrate graduation readiness.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education have jointly offered guidance on the use of functional behavioral assessments for all students whose behavior interferes with learning.

The training series being offered by the NJDOE was first offered in January 2024 and is making a return after receiving strong interest.
