Exploring the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) that Affect Our Student Population

Thursday, May 8 @ 1 p.m.

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) affect student physical health, mental health and academic success. School systems must address poverty, food insecurity, transportation, homelessness, housing, and social isolation as well as educational and health literacy. Addressing these determinants through interventions will foster a healthier, supportive environment, improving mental health and academic success. Wellness encompasses eight mutually interdependent dimensions: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental. Neglect of any can, over time, adversely affect the others. The concrete steps that will be enumerated and openly discussed are all meant to positively impact the well-being and mental health of the student population.

This webinar will be livestreamed via Zoom and on NJSBA’s YouTube channel. Pre-registration is required to receive credit. The webinar offers one (1) Board Member Academy credit.

Policy with Heart: Restoring Hope Through Grief Support and Restorative Practices

Wednesday, June 4 @ 1 p.m.

See where empathy meets accountability in education. In today’s schools, policy can be more than procedure—it can be a pathway to healing. Policy with Heart invites school board members to explore compassionate, actionable strategies that support students navigating grief and trauma. By integrating restorative practices and the “Grief Bill” framework, this session empowers educational leaders to foster resilient strategies and connect with school communities where every student feels seen, heard, and supported. (The “Grief Bill” in New Jersey mandates that New Jersey public schools include grief education in their health curriculum for students in grades 8 through 12.)
