TRENTON, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy has officially declared May 11-17, 2025, as “Special Education Week” in New Jersey, honoring the remarkable achievements of the state’s 242,000 children receiving special education services and acknowledging the tireless dedication of educators, parents, and support professionals.

In his proclamation, signed April 14, 2025, the governor “calls upon all residents to recognize the achievements of New Jersey’s special education students and the outstanding contributions made by educators, school board members, schools and agencies for the disabled, and their parents.”

For four decades, the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) and ASAH, a leading organization representing private special education schools, have partnered to sponsor Special Education Week, underscoring their unwavering commitment to supporting students with diverse learning needs.

The governor’s proclamation praises the “public school districts and private schools (that) make a major contribution to the public welfare by preparing thousands of exceptional persons to participate as citizens of this state and as members of society.”

Adding to the week’s celebration, the NJSBA will showcase the innovative programs of the winners of the 2025 Innovations in Special Education Award. A special video highlighting these exemplary initiatives will be released on the NJSBA YouTube channel during Special Education Week, demonstrating the unique approaches being implemented across the state.

This proclamation serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering inclusive and supportive learning environments for all students, ensuring they have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
