On Monday, March 4, the Sussex County School Boards Association held its first Unsung Heroes awards ceremony at High Point Regional High School in Sussex, recognizing 25 students from 25 school districts.
Unsung Heroes make outstanding contributions to their schools and communities, even though they are often overlooked under traditional student recognition guidelines. Unsung Heroes can be students who make their school a better place because of their warm personality, their empathy and concern for others. They tend not to let obstacles stop them.
About 150 people attended the event, including Karen Cortellino, M.D., president of the New Jersey School Boards Association; SCSBA President Wayne Dunne, SCSBA First Vice President Ron Hoffman; Marie Bilik, an NJSBA board of directors delegate; Ray Pinney, lead director of member training and engagement at the NJSBA; and Kelly Mitchell, an NJSBA field service representative. County Activities Coordinator Rob Acerra, also with the NJSBA, coordinated the logistics and planning of the event.
